Record International Student Visa Applications Signal Post-Pandemic Rebound

Australia's international education sector is experiencing a strong recovery, with student visa applications reaching their highest levels since border closures began in 2020, driven largely by applicants from India, China, Nepal, and the Philippines.

The Department of Home Affairs has reported a substantial surge in student visa (subclass 500) applications over the past twelve months, with processing times tightening and approval rates stabilising after a volatile post-pandemic period marked by backlogs and policy uncertainty.

India remains the single largest source of student visa applicants, followed closely by China, Nepal, Colombia, and the Philippines. Universities in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Adelaide have reported record enrolments in engineering, information technology, nursing, and business programs — sectors where Australia continues to face significant domestic skills gaps that international graduates help fill through post-study work visa pathways.

The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), which allows international students to remain in Australia and gain work experience after completing their studies, has also seen a marked increase in applications. The government extended 485 visa durations in 2023 as part of a broader strategy to retain skilled graduates in regional areas and key industries.

However, the surge has reignited debate over housing affordability and infrastructure capacity in major cities. Several state governments have urged the federal government to better distribute international students across regional campuses, offering incentives such as priority visa processing for applicants who commit to studying and residing outside capital cities for at least two years after graduation.
